For her third album for Piano Classics Zlata Chochieva chose the complete Etudes-tableaux by Rachmaninoff, music close to her heart.

“I always feel immensely fortunate to perform these masterpieces of a composer whom I whole-heartedly adore.
Rachmaninoff composed most of his works, including the Etudes-tableaux, at his family estate in Ivanovka, 600 km south of Moscow - he returned there each summer for more than twenty years, a habit only put to an end by his emigration in 1917. I visited his house there this August to absorb its special atmosphere, and to experience the inspiration and magical spirit which must have made this incredibly peaceful land such a joy and place of refuge for him.
It is a great privilege to be able to experience these worlds that the Tableaux present, full of emotional poetry, romantic beauty, painful tragedy, darkness and light, and a boundless love for Russia.
So much so that, for me, this music makes life worth living.”

These rarely heard piano transcriptions of Wagner and Verdi operas share a common theme: Love and Death, the two most important themes of opera, as a reflection of human life and fate.
First the pianist Abdiel Vazquez presents his own “Meistersinger Rhapsody”, a stunning pianistic tour de force. The three Wagner transcriptions (Ride of the Valkyries, Siegmund’s Love Song, Love Scene and Transfiguration from Tristan) are by Carl Tausig, Liszt’s favourite pupil, an awesome pianist and composer, died tragically young. The Concert Fantasy over themes from La Forza del Destino is by Italian composer Giuseppe Martucci (a wonderful composer with a fine ear for instrumental colours), followed by two famous paraphrases by Liszt (Rigoletto, Aida). The disc finds a spectacular conclusion in the fiendishly difficult Trovatore Paraphrase by György Cziffra.

01 44 Variations, Epilogue, Cadenza And Fugue On The Opening Theme Of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony
Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) was one of the greatest and most legendary pianists of the 20th century. As a composer he is most famous for his transcriptions and paraphrases, all displaying a daunting virtuosity. This new recording presents Godowsky’s original work the Passacaglia, 44 variations on Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, one of the most complicated and difficult piano pieces ever written, as well as a selection of transcriptions of Schubert Songs. The Strauss paraphrases (Wein, Weib und Gesang, Alt Wien) are frequently played concert pieces, a firework display of virtuosity, ingenuity and brilliance.
Pianist Emanuele Delucchi (b. 1987) followed the famous Imola School in Italy, won the gold Medal at the Alkan/Zimmermann Competition and is a champion of lesser known romantic composers (Alkan, Godowsky, Bussotti), “A true lion of the keyboard, a discovery” (Matthias Ross).
Delucchi plays on a Steinway of 1906 from the collection of Marco Barletta, an instrument perfectly suited to the repertoire, from the same time as Godowsky’s compositions.

This recording contains some of the most popular, endearing and affectionate piano works by Claude Debussy, early works, written while still under the influence of Chopin and French romantic symbolism. Polish pianist Hubert Rutkowski is a prize‐holder of many international and national piano competitions, including the Main Prize of the Chopin Competition in Hannover (2007); distinction "Medalla per Unanimitat" at the 52nd International Maria Canals Piano Competition in Barcelona (2006) amongst many others. He studied at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and later the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg in the class of professor Evgeni Koroliov. Since April 2010 he has served as a professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg as one of the youngest professors in this university. Since November 2011, Hubert Rutkowski has been leading also his piano class at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen.

Nikolai Kapustin: Piano Works: Sukyeon Kim
Nikolai Kapustin (born in 1937 in Ukraine) was trained as a classical pianist at Moscow Conservatory by Alexander Goldenweiser (one of the legendary pianists of the Russian Piano School). During the 1950s he won fame as a Jazz pianist. As a composer he fused both styles, using Jazz idioms in classical structures, like the Sonata, (quasi baroque) Suite and Preludes and Fugues. His music gains rapidly in popularity, and an increasing number of famous pianists programme his works in recitals.
Young Korean Sukyeon Kim is the perfect interpreter of this music: without exaggerating its jazzy character her phenomenally supple and natural technique gives an irresistible “Schwung“ to these fascinating pieces of spine tingling virtuosity and brilliance.

AMERICAN ROMANTICS: THE BOSTON SCENE
A unique collection of American romantic piano music, written largely in the last third of the 19th century, by Foote, Whiting, Paine, Chadwick and Nevin. In a period where in Europe piano music was in the hands of towering virtuosos like Liszt, Anton Rubinstein and later Rachmaninoff, the American scene was notably less tormented, focusing on tone painting idyllic landscapes, rural scenes and charming dance forms. These genre pieces share the same delightful characteristics as their European pendants by Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Gade, Sinding and others.
Young pianist Artem Belogurov (born in Latvia, grew up in Odessa/Ukraine and now lives in Boston) is a former student of Peter Serkin. For this recording he plays a beautiful period instrument, a 1873 Chickering piano. Chickering was one of the most respected and successful piano builders of the 19th century, Hans von Bülow premiered Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto in Boston on a Chickering, and Franz Liszt owned two of their instruments.
The booklet contains extensive liner notes on the music and composers, an artist biography and information and photos of the instrument.

This is Vincenzo Maltempo’s 5-th Alkan CD, establishing himself not only as the Champion of Alkan’s music, but as a formidable musician, a pianist of extraordinary power, sensitivity and intellect. This Alkan recital presents some of Alkan’s quirky and eccentric works, not necessarily of epic proportions (like his 12 Etudes in the minor key Op. 39), but often on a small scale, concentrating manically on a single idea, creating a hallucinatory and mesmerising effect (or simply hilarious...). The title song, the Song of the Mad Woman on the Seashore, creates in just a few minutes and just a few notes a profound feeling of alienation. Benjamin Godard was a highly prolific 19th Century French composer, writing in nearly every possible genre: opera, symphonies, concertos, chamber and solo music. The Berceuse from his opera Jocelyn became a classic “hit”. This new recording present 81 minutes of works for piano solo, including the first complete recording of the “20 pièces pour piano Op. 58”. The music is of enchanting and idyllic simplicity, conjuring up innocent landscapes, pastoral scenes and bucolic humour. Of especial fame is his piano piece “Les patineurs”, the ice skaters.

To commemorate the 80th birthday of Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) Russian pianist Denys Proshayev made a new recording of Schnittke’s Concerto for Piano & Strings, the 5 Aphorisms for piano solo, and the Gogol Suite for piano 4-hands. Schnittke’s music is highly controversial, drawing inspiration from widely diverse sources and styles, alternating the banal with the sublime, the spiritual with the bizarre. Proshayev dedicates this CD to the memory of his late teacher Vladimir Krainev, a close friend of Schnittke, and dedicatee of the Piano Concerto. Proshayev shows a palpable affinity to this music, intensely dedicated and convincing, giving meaning to each and every note, a true advocate of this fascinating composer!

Francesco Cilea went into history as the composer of one opera, Adrienne Lecouvreur. However, this late romantic Italian left a fine oeuvre of chamber and solo music, a selection of which is presented on this CD: piano works and the cello sonata. The piano works are wonderfully evocative character pieces, full of subtlety and finesse, in the style of early Debussy. The title piece, Acque correnti, is a Ravelian study in sonority and instrumental glitter. The Cello Sonata is a valuable addition to the repertoire.

A very personal account of two of Schumann masterworks, the Papillons and Davidbündlertänze. In these two works Schumann presents his inner world of characters of the fictitious “Davidsbund”, based on the novels of Jean-Paul, featuring such diverse personalities as Florestan, Eusebius, Estrella, Chiara, characters with which Schumann identifies his own opposing characteristics. Florestan is his fiery, heroic and impulsive side, Eusebius is his tender, reflective and dreamy side. Denis Proshayev plunges deep into this dreamlike world, letting his fantasy run free on the whims of Schumann “fantastic” outpourings. His playing is totally free and spontaneous, while never losing the logical thread of the musical discourse.

Ravel: Complete Piano Music: Francois Dumont
This set of Ravel's piano solo works is the most complete up to date, as it contains both Ravel's transcription of La Valse, and the little known La Parade. Fortunately this is not the main attraction of this issue, that being the superlative quality of Francois Dumont's playing. His pianism is of the highest order, a virtuosity which doesn't want to impress for its own sake, but a means of conveying the wonderful harmonics, colours and atmospheres of these works of genius. Dumont lets each work grow organically under his hands, bringing out the inner logic, power and beauty, eschewing all extravagance or exhibitionism (Ravel himself wanted his works “to be played, not interpreted"). An ideal performance, if such does exist. The recording puts the Steinway in a rich acoustic without sacrificing any detail.

This well filled CD (79 minutes) contain the complete transcriptions for piano that Rachmaninoff made of compositions of various composers. Being a celebrated pianist and a genius composer, Rachmaninoff didn't literally transcribe, but added his own unique pianistic and compositional features to them, creating as much his own masterwork as is the original. Ranging from Bach (3 movements from the Violin Partita in E), through transcriptions of his own and Tachikovsky's songs, Mendelssohn's Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream of hair-raising difficulty, he ends with fashionable transcriptions of Kreisler's Liebesleid and Liebesfreud, a pianistic tour de force and favourite encore.

The Prélude, chorale et fugue is Franck's pianistic pièce de résistance, although also here the influence of Franck the organist is never far away. An excellent new recording by Italian pianist Domenico Codispoti, playing with a beautiful blend of grandeur and intimacy, and a wonderful transparency (listen to the canonic 4-th movement of the violin sonata!)

Any new recording of Charles-Valentin Alkan is an event, which hopes to widen the public appreciation of this still unknown genius of the French Romantic period. One of the greatest virtuosos of his time (even Franz Liszt was nervous to play in his presence) he wrote piano music of the most colossal proportions, scope and difficulty. Born in Australia Bruce Hungerford (1922-1977) studied with the legendary Ignaz Friedman in Sydney. His move to the USA brought him in contact with Myra Hess, who gave him valuable coaching, and later with Carl Friedberg. His prodigious qualities caught the attention of the Solomon brothers of the American Vanguard Classics label who contracted him for a complete Beethoven cycle recording. Michel Block (1937-2003) gained international attention and fame when at the 1960 Chopin Competition jury member Artur Rubinstein was so outraged by the jury decision that he awarded Michel Block with the special Artur Rubinstein Award on the spot. Two years later Michel Block, a Juilliard laureate, won the prestigious Leventritt Award. He embarked on an international solo career, and played with esteemed orchestras like The New York Philharmonic, Berliner Philharmoniker, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Chicago Symphony and London Symphony Orchestra, and conductors Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink and Georg Solti. After entering the Music faculty of Bloomington, he ceased his busy concert schedule. His rare public appearances after that were memorable events.

Enrico Pace was born in 1967 in Rimini, Italy. He studied the piano with Franco Scala, first at the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro and later at the Accademia Pianistica Incontri col Maestro in Imola. In the spring of 2003, Roberto Poli recorded what would have become the first volume of the monumental project that comprises the complete works for piano of Fryderyk Chopin. “It began with the desire of immortalizing some of the works to which I feel most connected", he comments. Little did he know where this first disc was going to bring him: during the following years, Chopin became the focus of Poli's studies. “I was intrigued by his manuscripts, obsessed by the innumerable details of his life, and won over by his music, especially by his late style. I had already learned his Barcarolle [Op. 60] and the last set of Nocturnes [Op. 62], which were part of the disc I had recorded in 2003; I had also learned the Polonaise Fantaisie [Op. 61], which has now accompanied almost two decades of my life. I concentrated several months on the study of the Sonata in b minor, Op. 58, which I had attempted to learn for over a decade. Something with it hadn't worked earlier, but this time it seemed to fall naturally in my hands. The music spoke freely to me for the first time. It was a break-through, and I began to learn the works that Chopin composed in the same period. That became the material for the second volume. I then went back to the Four Ballades, which I learned between my late teens and early twenties, and other works around the Fourth Ballade, such as The Mazurkas, Op. 50, the Impromptu, Op. 51 and the Polonaise Op. 53. I seemed to have two more Chopin programs ready, and decided to record them along with other short pieces I had learned more recently. The rest is history". As Poli approached the recording of the second disc, he decided to continue the project with recordings of live performances. “In retrospect it was a wise choice: it gives me the opportunity to experience the repertoire I record in a very intense, emotionally charged situation, and it's truly amazing what adrenaline can do! I'm aware that it's a risky proposition, but few things in life are more challenging than having to convince an empty hall!"

Evgeny Koroliov’s Golberg variations have become a cult recording. Seldom has this monumental piece sounded so purely musical, with such natural rhetorics, in fact simply so beautiful as in his hands.
This recording (licensed from Haenssler Classics) was showered with international prizes, such as Diapason d’or and others. György Ligeti chose Koroliov’s Bach as his desert island disc : “forsaken and dying of thirst, I would listen to it up till my last breath”.
Koroliov was born in Russia in 1949, his teachers were Maria Yudina, Heinrich Neuhaus and Lev Oborin. He soon settled in Hamburg/Germany, from where he developed his international career as a soloist and much-in-demand teacher.
